An Exam That Weights the State Heavily
The Madhya Pradesh Public Service Commission's State Service Examination, MPPCS, fills posts including Deputy Collector, Deputy Superintendent of Police and a range of state services. Its pattern follows UPSC's shape with two differences that matter: the state's own content carries a larger share than in most PCS exams, in both Prelims and Mains, and the Mains has no Optional but a fourth General Studies paper on ethics, personality and management that is closer to UPSC's GS IV than any other state paper. The figures below reflect recent notifications; the notification of the year you appear is the authority.
Structure in Recent Cycles
| Stage | Papers | Marks | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prelims | Paper I General Studies: 100 questions; Paper II General Aptitude Test: 100 questions | 200 each | Two hours each; no negative marking in recent cycles; Paper II qualifying at 40 per cent; Paper I decides the cut-off |
| Mains | GS I, II, III and IV; General Hindi; Hindi Essay | GS papers 300 each; Hindi 200; Essay 100; total 1,400 | Three hours each; no Optional; fixed word limits; GS IV covers ethics, personality and management |
| Interview | Personality test | 175 | Rank on Mains plus interview, 1,575 |
Eligibility broadly matches UPSC's on education; the age band is 21 to 40 for the general category with relaxations, and attempts are not capped. Verify the current notification for every figure, including negative marking and the aptitude paper's qualifying mark, which have changed in the past.
Prelims: A Heavy MP Share and a Qualifying Aptitude Paper
Paper I covers the UPSC GS syllabus and Madhya Pradesh, with the state taking a larger share than in most PCS exams: in recent papers, 25 to 35 of the 100 questions are on MP's history, geography, economy, polity, culture, tribes, and current affairs, and a further set on the state's public administration and information technology initiatives. Questions are direct and factual. The absence of negative marking in recent cycles changes the attempt strategy: every question is attempted, and elimination to two options is worth doing on every doubtful question. Paper II is qualifying at 40 per cent, higher than UPSC's CSAT threshold, and covers comprehension, reasoning, decision-making, basic numeracy and Hindi comprehension; it needs regular practice rather than last-month attention.
The MP Special GK Annexe
| Topic | What is asked | Source |
|---|---|---|
| History of MP | Prehistoric sites such as Bhimbetka; ancient dynasties and sites including Ujjain, Sanchi and Vidisha; the Malwa Sultanate and Mughal period; the Marathas, Holkars and Scindias; 1857 in MP; freedom fighters; formation of the state in 1956 and the 2000 bifurcation | One standard MP GK book; state archaeology department material |
| Geography of MP | Physiography including the Malwa plateau, Vindhya and Satpura ranges; rivers including the Narmada, Chambal, Son and Betwa; soils and climate; forests and the state's many national parks and tiger reserves; minerals; districts and divisions | MP GK book; atlas with MP marked; forest department data |
| Economy of MP | State budget and economic survey, agriculture and the state's leading crops, industry and industrial corridors, energy, major schemes by department | State budget summary; economic survey; departmental websites |
| Polity and administration | Legislature, Governor and ministers, panchayati raj and urban bodies, state commissions, administrative structure, e-governance initiatives | MP GK book; state government websites |
| Tribes and culture | Major tribes such as the Gond, Bhil, Baiga, Korku and Sahariya with their regions; tribal art and festivals; folk arts, music, dance and drama; fairs; literature and writers; monuments and UNESCO sites at Khajuraho, Sanchi and Bhimbetka | MP GK book; tribal affairs and culture department publications |
| Current affairs of MP | Schemes, appointments, awards, events, sports, infrastructure | State page of a Hindi daily; state press releases |
The tribal and cultural sections are asked more heavily in MPPCS than in other state exams and deserve their own pair lists: tribe with region and festival, art form with district, monument with dynasty and site.
Mains: Four GS Papers, Hindi and Essay
- GS I: history, culture and geography, with the MP share prominent; questions in fixed word limits from very short to long
- GS II: polity, economy, social issues and sociology, with MP-specific administration and schemes
- GS III: science and technology, environment, and reasoning and data interpretation, with an applied and factual emphasis
- GS IV: ethics, personality, attitude, emotional intelligence, management and case studies, structured like UPSC's GS IV; the UPSC Ethics preparation transfers directly and gives UPSC aspirants an advantage
- General Hindi: grammar, comprehension, translation and composition, counted for rank at 200 marks, which is a larger share than in most state exams
- Hindi Essay: essays of varying lengths on set themes
The Mains rewards breadth with precision: many short-answer questions across the syllabus, each needing the specific fact or example, with MP examples wherever the theme allows. Ten years of MPPCS Mains PYQs sorted by theme show heavy recurrence.

- Skipping the tribal and cultural sections, which MPPCS asks heavily
- Planning from an old pattern; confirm negative marking and paper weights in the current notification
